(a) (i) War shatters pride as it traumatises the soldiers, breaks the economy, and leads to heavy losses on both sides.

(iii) After the war is over, the men return home with broken pride and hearts, having survived through many losses. Thus, they seem to have been reduced to the state of helpless children.


(iv) They have survived the war, but they have lost much, including friends and family. Their losses make them ‘broken and mad ‘


(v) The poem contrasts the feelings of pride at winning the way and the shattering of pride due to the war itself.
