Q11 of 30 Page 1

(a) Where do the signals for parturition originate from in humans?

(b) Why is it important to feed the new born babies on colostrum?

a. Signals for parturition or delivery of foetus are induced by foetus and the placenta. The mild uterine contractions (foetal ejection reflex) originated by the foetus and placenta trigger the release of oxytocin which results in stronger contractions.

b. Colostrum, contains several antibodies (IgA) which are absolutely essential to develop resistance for the new-born babies. This is why it is important to feed the need born babies on colostrum to increase their immunity.
