Draw the structure of the following compounds:

(i)H2S2O7

(ii)XeOF4

OR

Write balanced chemical equations for the following:

(i)Reaction of chlorine with hot and concentrated NaOH.

(ii) SO2 is passed through an aqueous solution of Fe(III) salt.

(i) the structure of pyrosulphuric acid or oleum H2S2O7 is -

In the above structure of H2S2O7, each S atom is connected with 3 oxygen atoms(2 of them are connected with double bond and another is connected with a single bond which acts as connector in between these 2 S atoms)

(ii) XeOF4

The structure of XeOF4 is square pyramidal-

(i)

When chlorine gas reacts with hot and concentrated NaOH a disproportionation reaction takes place .

In this case Cl (0) oxidises to NaClO3 ( +5) and reduces to NaCl (-1) simultaneously.

6NaOH + Cl2 --> 5NaCl + NaClO3 + 3H2O

(ii)

When Sulphur dioxide is passed through an aqueous solution of Fe (III) salt SO2 acts as an reducing agent and eventually converts Fe (III) to Fe (II).

2Fe3+ + SO2 + 2H2O 2Fe2+ + SO42- + 4H+
