In Srilanka, an Act was passed in 1956 to recognize Sinhala as the only official language, disregarding Tamil.Sri Lanka emerged as an independent country in 1948. The leaders of the Sinhala community wanted to secure their dominance over the government due to their majority. They followed many majoritarian measures to establish their Supremacy. One such measure was the recognition of Sinhala as the only official language. This increased the feeling of alienation among the Sri Lankan Tamils. None of the major political party was sensitive to their language and culture.
