Q3 of 11 Page 6

It is said that the water resources in India have been depleting very fast. Discuss the factors responsible for the depletion of water resources?

The factors responsible for the depletion of water resources are:

a. The population of India is increasing at an alarming rate over the past year. An increase in the number of people implies a higher demand for water. This has led to a decrease in the availability of freshwater and per capita availability of water.

b. India is primarily an agrarian country. A major population of the country depends upon agriculture for its livelihood. The water required for irrigation in agriculture is a lot. This has led to the overutilization of the groundwater resources.

c. The industrialization has increased by many folds after independence. This has led to a major water crisis and even water pollution in our country. Most of the industries dump the industrial effluents in the water resources such as a nearby river or a lake creating water pollution.

d. Sewage disposal.

e. The natural causes of water pollution are landslides and soil erosion.

f. The cultural activities causing water pollution are tourism and religious fairs.
