The causes of the deterioration of the quality of water in India are explained below:

a. The industries dump the toxic substances in the nearby lake, river, ocean for any other water body. This is done without dissolving or suspending the pollutants. It not only leads to a fall in the quality of water but also harms aquatic life.


b. When the toxic substances are seeped down in the soil, they lead to the pollution of the groundwater.


c. The foreign substances like microorganisms and Chemicals cause water pollution. They make the water unfit for human drinking purposes.


d. The domestic waste discharge pollutes the water.


e. Sewage disposal.


f. The natural causes of water pollution are landslides and soil erosion.


g. The cultural activities causing water pollution are tourism and religious fairs.
