Q7 of 22 Page 1

(i) Write down the IUPAC name of the following complex: [Co(NH3)5Cl] 2+

(ii) Write the formula for the following complex: Potassium tetrachloridonickelate(II)

(i) IUPAC name of [Co(NH3)5Cl] 2+ is pentaamminechlorocobalt (III)

There are 5 NH3 ligands which are neutral ligands and 1 chlorine having -1 oxidation state. Let the oxidation state of Co be x.

Then, x +0 -1 = +2

x= +3 i.e oxidation state of Co which is mentioned in bracket after name of metal.

(ii) IUPAC name of complex: Potassium tetrachloridonickelate(II)

Formula: K2[Ni(Cl)4]

Tetrachloridonickelate(II) means 4 Cl ligands (having -1 oxidation state) with Ni as metal having +2 oxidation state in the anionic part of complex. Cationic part of complex contains potassium (K).

Therefore, the total anionic charge will be (+2-4) i.e. -2 and total cationic charge is +1. Therefore, the formula of complex is K2[Ni(Cl)4].
