Write the structures of the monomers used for getting the following polymers:

(a) Teflon


(b) Melamine-formaldehyde polymer


(c) Neoprene

(a) Teflon [PTFE] – Tertrafluoroethene [nF2C = CF2] is the monomer of Teflon. Since it is heat resistant it is used for non-stick cook ware, gaskets etc. The polymer is formed by addition polymerization. The reaction is:


(b) The compounds used for this polymer are melamine and formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde polymer or resin is formed by condensation polymerization. The polymer obtained is a thermosetting polymer and thus is used to make plastic crockery. The structure of these compounds are as follows:



(c) Neoprene – It is prepared by the free radical polymerization of chloroprene. It is used as insulator for making belts, gaskets, hoses etc. The reaction is follows:
