How did a story book, ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy’ open a window of knowledge to Helen and help to shape her career?

Anne Sullivan had promised Helen that they would read “Little Lord Fauntleroy” which was a great story about a little boy. Helen recalled distinctly the day, the environment and the hammock in which her teacher read out the first chapters of the book. Though in the beginning she was interrupted by so many new words, she got really engrossed in the story. When her teacher got absolutely tired and couldn’t spell more, Helen felt the immensity of her deprivation. She tried desperately to read the pages but in vain. Then she requested Mr. Anagnos to get it embossed and she read the book so many times that she almost remembered it by heart.

Unlike the other books of her childhood that she had read before ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy’, she read this completely and with understanding. It brought her into the pleasurable world of reading. After this book, she read many more books in the following years, each of which gave her some unique experience.
