Q25 of 124 Page 74

A 60 g bullet fired from a 5 kg gun leaves with a speed of 500 m/s. Find the speed (velocity) with which the gun recoils (jerks backwards).

Mass of bullet, m1 = 0.06 kg,

Speed of bullet, v1 = 500m/s

Mass of gun, m2 = 5kg,

Velocity of recoil of gun, v2 = ?

By using the law of conservation of momentum,

0.06×500 = 5×v2

v2 = 0.06*500/5

= 6m/s

Hence, the gun recoils with the velocity of 6m/s.
