Why is it that non-metals do not displace hydrogen from dilute acids?

Except for carbon all the non-metals are below hydrogen in the activity series of the elements because of which Non-metals do not evolve hydrogen gas when reacting with water, steam or dilute acids. To displace hydrogen from the non-metal should be placed above hydrogen in the activity series.
