The cross-section of a canal is trapezium in shape. If the canal is 12m wide at the top, 8 m wide at the bottom and the area of cross-section is 84 m2. Find its depth.

Given that Canal is 12m wide which implies a distance between the two parallel sides is 12m.


Also, one side equals 8m. let other side be k.


Area of Trapezium = 84m2


84 = ×(sum of parallel sides)×(distance between them)


84 =



8 + k = 14


k = 14 – 8


k = 6 cm.


Depth = 6 cm.
