Find out the composition and uses of commonly used plastics like thermocol, PVC and PET.

i. Thermocol:


Thermocol is also called as polystyrene and it is obtained by the polymerization of phenylethylene. The reaction is as follows:



It is used for making kitchen utensils, measuring cups, packing material etc.


ii. PVC:


It is made from the polymerization of vinyl chloride. The reaction is as follows:



It is widely used in plumbing materials, raincoats, imitation leather, electrical cable insulation etc.


iii. PET:


PET is manufactured by the condensation polymerization reaction between ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. The reaction is as follows:



It is used in clothing, containers for liquids, packing trays, a substrate for solar cells etc.
