Metal oxides form basic oxides. For example:

When sodium oxide (metal oxide) reacts with water, it forms sodium hydroxide which is a basic oxide. Basic oxide shows basic properties. The reaction is given as:


Na2O + H2O NaOH


The other example is magnesium oxide:


When magnesium oxide reacts with water, it forms magnesium hydroxide which is a basic oxide and shows all the properties of a base. The reaction is given as:


MgO + H2O Mg(OH)2
