Give reason - tartaric acid is added to baking soda to make baking powder.

For making baking powder, which is a mixture of baking soda and a mild edible acid such as tartaric acid is added. It is added so that it can help in the formation of carbon dioxide which is mainly responsible for making the bread or cake dough soft, fluffy and spongy. When baking powder is mixed in water, the following reaction takes place:

NaHCO3 + H+ CO2 + H2O + sodium salt of any acid
