What is Mahalwari System?

The Mahalwari system:

1. It was introduced in the North Western provinces of Bengal Presidency, Agra, Awadh (Oudh), Central parts of India, Punjab by Lord Hastings.


2. It was a revenue system where the revenue was collected from the village, rather than from individual peasants.


3. The land was not owned by an individual but by a group of estates or villages called Mahal.


4. The village headman was supposed to pay the revenue to the Company.


5. All the proprieties of a Mahal were jointly responsible.
