Note on British rule in India.

The British rule in India started with the Battle of Plassey in 1757 which was won by them under the leadership of Robert Clive. They went on to win other provinces with time.

1. They changed the administrative and social structure of the country.

2. Land revenue system was changed which resulted in poverty for the land owners and farmers.

3. Interference in social matters led to disliking towards the East India Company.

4. Apart from that there was major discrimination against the Indian soldiers working with the Army.

5. These all led to the revolt of 1857.

6. It was seen by many as the first war of Independence.

7. British after a lot of efforts were successful in failing the revolt and with the Act of 1858, the administration of India was transferred to the Crown in England.

8. Control of India was given over to a British Governor-General, who reported back to the British Parliament.

9. The Queen promised to work for the betterment of its subjects.

10. But instead they started exploiting the country in various ways.

11. Many policies like divide and rule were employed to create communal hatred. Policies like communal representation were meant to divide Hindus and Muslims.

12. Other means like Vernacular Press Act were meant for controlling the press.
