The Battle of Buxar was fought on 23 October 1764 between the forces of the British East India Company led by Hector Munro and the combined army of Mughal rulers. The Britishers fought the battle for obtaining the rights of diwani over Bengal.If they had lost the battle, the rule of Nawabs would not have ended. The expansion of British rule to other provinces like Awadh would not have happened. Apart from that, the East India Company would have been just a trader to India and could not expand its presence in the economic and societal domain.
