Q5 of 15 Page 10

Why was indigo in great demand in European countries?

Demand for indigo in Europe:

1. Indigo as a cloth dye produced a rich blue colour and it was only grown in tropical climates.

2. As industrialization and cotton production expanded, demand for indigo only kept on increasing.

3. Its substitute was a plant called woad but its colour was not as good as indigo’s.

4. Between 1783 and 1789, the supply of indigo from the West Indies and America fell dramatically.

5. This led to a huge increase in demand for Indian indigo.
