Find the value of a, for which point P (a, 2) is the midpoint of the line segment joining the points Q (–5, 4) and R(–1, 0).

Mid-point (x, y) = (a, 2)


Q(x1, y1) = (–5, 4)


R(x2, y2) = (–1, 0)


Putting the values, we get



⇒ (a, 2) = (–2, 2)


On comparing, we get


a = 2
