Write down the differences between diffusion and osmosis.

Differences between diffusion and osmosis:

Diffusion

Osmosis

Diffusion the movement of particles or molecules from a high concentration area to a low concentration area.

Osmosis is the movement of particles or solvent molecules through a semi permeable membrane into a high concentration area from a low concentration area.

It occurs in any medium.

It occurs in only liquid(water) medium.

It is applicable to all types of substances like solid, liquid or gases.

It is applicable to solvent part of the solution.

Semi permeable membrane is not required.

Semi permeable membrane is required.

Concentration of the diffusion substance equalizes to fill the available space.

Concentration of solvent does not become equal on both sides of the membrane.

Goes from a high concentration gradient to a low concentration gradient

Moves down concentration gradient
