Explain in brief about the Blandongdiensten system.

In India, the requirement for shipbuilding and railways led to the introduction of forest service. From Java alone, 280,000 sleepers were exported. To cut the trees, transport the logs and to prepare the sleepers labours were required. For this purpose, Dutch decided to impose rent on the land that was being cultivated in the forest, and if the villages worked together to provide free labour and buffaloes for cutting and transporting timber, then they don’t have to pay the rent. This system came to know as the Blandongdiensten system.

Later, instead of exempting them from paying rent, they were given small wages. Their right to cultivate forest land was restricted.
