‘‘Ibn Battuta found cities in the Indian subcontinent full of exciting opportunities.’’ Explain the statement with reference to the city of Delhi.

Ibn Battuta was a Moroccan traveller who came to visit India in the 14^th century. He was fascinated by the cities of the subcontinent. He noted that the cities were full of exciting opportunities for those who had the necessary drive, resources and skills. He described Delhi as a vast city, that was densely populated, the largest in India. The bright and colorful markets were not only places of the economic transaction but also the hub of social and cultural activities. A mosque and a temple were built at the centre of bazaars. Spaces were marked for the public performances by dancers, musicians and singers. The streets were crowded and full of lights. The city has 28 gates which are called Darwaza. Of these, the Badaun Darwaza was the greatest. The city was globally connected through the vast network of communication.
