Q5 of 30 Page 13

If the mean and variance of a binomial distribution are respectively 9 and 6, find the distribution.

Let X denote the variance with parameters n and p

p + q = 1 ⇒ q = 1 - p

Given, mean = np = 9 and variance = npq = 6

npq = 6

⇒9q = 6

Now, np = 9

⇒ n = 27

The required binomial distribution is given by,

An urn contains 5 red and 5 black balls. A ball is drawn at random, its colour is noted and is returned to the urn. Moreover, 2 additional balls of the colour drawn are put in the urn and then a ball is drawn at random. What is the probability that the second ball is red?

A bag contains 25 tickets, numbered from 1 to 25. A ticket is drawn and then another ticket is drawn without replacement. Find the probability that both tickets will show even numbers.

7

Given that the events A and B are such that P(A) = 1/2, P (A ∪ B) = 3/5 and P(B) = p. Find p if they are (i) mutually exclusive (ii) independent.
