Q12 of 66 Page 7

For what values of x are the points (x,-1),(2,1) and (4,5) lie on a line? (CBSE 2013)

Let the points be A(x, -1), B(2, 1) and C(4, 5)

Now as the points are collinear, therefore

mAB = MBC

2 = 2(2 – x) = 4 – 2x

or 2x = 4 – 2

⇒ 2x = 2
⇒ x = 1
