“The emergence of sociology and its successful establishment as an academic discipline owed a lot to demography.” How?

The term Demography is derived from the Greek origin, it is a combination of two words demos which means people and graphein which means to describe, and thus the term demography means the description of people. In other words, it is a systematic study of the population.

• Demography studies about the trend and the processes related to population, such as changes in the population size, births, deaths, migration and related to the structure and composition of the population such as the size of the population of women, men and other age groups.

• Demography also is of different varieties like formal demography which is a mostly quantitative field; social demography which deals with the social, economic and political aspects of the population.

• Demography also deals with the counting and dealing with it such as -survey or census which means to conduct as a systematic collection of data to know about the number of people living or residing in a specific territory.

Demography as a field is of prime importance to sociology as its development and establishment also depended on Demography as an important aspect of the society.

Thus, “The emergence of sociology and its successful establishment as an academic discipline owed a lot to demography.”
