Q9 of 18 Page 1

Why did Mahatma Gandhi think Hindustani should be the national language?

India is a diverse country. There are different cultures, languages, and religions that exist in India. Mahatma Gandhi regarded Hindustani as the national language of India as it was not inclined towards people of one community. It was a blend of Hindi and Urdu and acted as the unifying force of Hindus and Muslims and people of the North and South. Hindustani assimilated words from foreign languages and was enriched by the interaction of diverse cultures. It was not confined to just one language. Rather it was a multi-cultural language and the ideal language of communication between diverse communities.
