The following were the problems faced by Al-Biruni in the task of understanding Indian Social and Brahamanical practices.


a. He found it difficult to translate the contents to Arabic or Persian as he did not understand Sanskrit.


b. He found it difficult to understand the caste system that was prevailing.


c. Understanding the differences in different religious practices was challenging for him.


The following are the sources that provided him the support to make his work.


a. Brahmanical works like the Vedas and the Puranas.


b. The Bhagavadgita, which is the holy book of the Hindus was a main source.


c. Manusmiritis, Dharmasastras and the writings of Patanjali were also some of the sources.
