Explain how Lord Dalhousie’s policy of annexation created dissatisfaction amongst the people of Awadh.

Lord Dalhousie’s policy of annexation stated that if any Indian ruler died without any legal heir, the kingdom will be annexed to the British empire.


This policy created dissatisfaction amongst the people of Awadh because of the following reasons:


a. The powers of the Nawab were reduced and he was dethroned because of the imposition of the Subsidiary Alliance.


b. People sang songs of lament and there was a sense of grief when the Nawab left Lucknow.


c. There were huge material loss and many people lost their livelihood.


d. The taluqdars were like father figures and the people were much agonized when their powers were taken away by the British.


e. The British imposed high taxes.


Thus, the feeling of dissatisfaction led to revolt.
