Q1 of 22 Page 1

Give two reasons for the unfavourable sex ratio in the world.

● Sex ratio is the ratio of male to female ratio in a particular area.

● It is calculated as:

Sex ratio: Number of males in an area/ Number of females in an area multiplies by 1000.

● It is usually 1:1 but in some areas, this ratio is an unfavourable one.

● The two main reasons for the unfavourable sex ratio in the world are mentioned below:

a) Low literacy rate: The people do not have awareness and knowledge required in the matter of bringing up a child. They think that a male will be an asset for their family as he can share the economic burden but a female would be a liability.

b) Female infanticide: This refers to the intentional killing of a female infant. This is also due to the lack of literacy level, poor socioeconomic strata and the mindset of the people.
