Discuss the problems associated with urban settlements in developing countries:

● LACK OF HOUSING: The people who shift to urban areas often belong to the lower income groups. They are unable to afford the high cost of rent to be paid to the landowners. As a result, they resort to occupying rooms illegally, overcrowding of areas, creating congested settlements etc.


● UNCONTROLLED GROWTH: With the migration from rural areas as well as the existing urban population, the cities have begun to expand in an uncontrolled manner. There is no planned system of expansion. This has led to many economic and social issues.


● POOR LIVING STANDARDS: The level of basic amenities such as food, clothing and shelter has deteriorated considerably. The standards of education, health and hygiene have also declined.
