Critically examine the social order of caste hierarchies laid in Dharamshastra & Dharma sutras.

The caste hierarchy laid in the Dharamshastra and Dharma-sutra is mentioned below along with their ideal occupations.

a) The Brahmanas were ranked first. They had to study and teach Vedas, perform sacrifices and get sacrifices performed, give and receive gifts.

b) Kshatriyas had to engage in warfare, protect people, administer justice, study and teach Vedas, perform sacrifices and get sacrifices performed.

c) Vaishyas had to be engaged in agriculture, pastoralist and trade.

d) Shudders had to serve the above three Varnas.

e) The Brahmanas issued 2-3 norms to enforce the above.

f) One was to assert that Verna is of divine origin

g) Another was to advise kings to ensure that these norms are followed in the kingdom

h) Also, they tried to convince people that the status is determined by birth.
