Refer to the line 'Thus conscience ……all.' Do you agree with the view referred to here?

Substantiate your opinion.

In the line the speaker says:

‘Thus conscience does make cowards of us all’


Which means that there is a conscience in our minds which tells us that even if we try to escape the hardships of life by dying, we know not what may happen after death; it could be more worse than what we have been familiar with. According to the speaker it is this conscience which instills in us the fear of death and prevents us from committing suicide and thus makes us a coward.


I, however disagree with the speaker’s view. I am of the opinion that our conscience doesn’t makes us a coward at all, it only helps us to do what is morally right and tries to prevent us from committing sins. If the conscience counsels one to give up the thought of committing suicide then it is the right decision because it requires courage to face the hardships of life and try to solve it rather than running away from it. Thus, our conscience makes us bold and not a coward.
