Q5 of 20 Page 93

'Forgiveness is the sweetest form of revenge" If Hamlet had followed this adage could he have saved his life. Write your answer in a paragraph, based on the story of Hamlets life and suitable examples from his soliloquy.

Forgiving is sometimes the sweetest form of revenge, but it may not have been the best form of advice for Hamlet to save his life. In the Shakespearian drama Hamlet, Hamlet is a prince who mourns the death of his father and is distressed to see that his mother has married his late father’s brother. Moreover, his father’s ghost appears to him and tells him to avenge his death because he was murdered. When Hamlet discovers that his uncle and now step-father was the murderer, he cannot simply forgive him. But a better decision could be to imprison the murderer for a lifetime and this would be the best decision as a king, because in this way he would have provided justice to the dead soul and wouldn’t feel the pangs of conscience which he does when he feels that he is going to murder someone.
