Q4 of 24 Page 1

Answer any two of the following questions in 80 - 100 words each:

(i) What happened, when the narrator in ‘I Cell my Dreams’ washaving breakfast on the terrace of Riviera Hotel?

(ii) What did the people of Golebrook observe in Hagberd?

(iii) Describe the pleasure dome Kubla Khan ordered to be built in Xanadu.

(i) In the text ‘I sell my Dreams’; the narrator was enjoying the sun while having breakfast on the terrace of the hotel when he saw a high wave rising due to a storm. This storm started destroying the moving and the parked cars; furniture and tourists were being thrown out of the broken windows. The entrance gate of the building was destroyed and there was sheer panic among the people staying in the hotel and on the road. Volunteers and people from the fire departments came to rescue the suffering people and everything was under control and normal within six hours. However, a while later the body of a woman was found under the debris, and the narrator recognized the body as that of Frau Frieda.

(ii) The people of Colebrook saw Hagberd as an old, retired and queer person. He was new to Colebrook and had shifted only three years ago. He was always looking for his son at different places of the town – asking sailors and people about his son, hoping to see his son return to him. The opinion of the people was not favorable towards him, as he was a miser, used to argue in shops and always had an irritating attitude towards all. He lived in isolation and did not have amicable or friendly relations with the people of the town. People used to make fun of him and his behavior.

(iii) The pleasure dome in Kubla Khan was an imaginary dome based on the imagination of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Kubla Khan wanted to construct a majestic pleasure dome. This dome would cover an area of five miles and would be surrounded by lush green gardens, walls and twisted and curved towers. Coleridge believed that this dome would be measureless to man and would be built on a spot where the river Alph flowed through caverns into the sunless sea.
