What is ‘untouchability’, and who was called ‘untouchables’?

● According to the traditional Indian societies norms untouchable was a member of the low caste Hindu group or any person outside the caste system.


● They were also called Harijans or Dalits.


● The name Harijan was given by Mahatma Gandhi in 1953. It meant Children of God.


● They were subjected to many restrictions.


● They were not allowed to enter temples nor did they have proper access to education in schools.


● They were also Forbidden to draw water from the Wells.
