What do you understand by manual scavenging?

● Manual scavenging is the practice of removing human and animal waste by hand or a broomstick and basket and carrying it on the head to the disposal ground at a distance.


● The person who does this job is called a manual scavenger.


● This is usually done by young girls or Dalits.


● They are constantly exposed to infections that may affect their health.


● They work in a sub-human condition and receive very low wages for the same.


● To put an end to this situation the Government of India had introduced an act in 1993.


● This was called the 'Employment of manual scavengers and construction of dry latrines (prohibition) act.


● This law prohibits the employment of manual scavengers and construction of dry latrines.
