What is a coalition government? What is the role of the Prime Minister in a coalition government?

● A government formed by an alliance of two or more political parties, usually when no single party enjoys majority support of the members in a legislature is called a coalition government.


● The coalition government has restrained the powers of the Prime Minister.


● If the Prime Minister belongs to a coalition government, he cannot take decisions on his own accord.


● He has to accommodate different groups and factions in his party and the alliance party.


● He also has to heed to the views and positions of the coalition partners.
