Q14 of 25 Page 3

Write a note on the global political scenario. How has poverty declined substantially in China and Southeast Asia?

The proportion of people living in developing countries in extreme economic poverty is the definition given by the World Bank as living on less than one dollar per day has fallen from 28% in 1990 to 21% in 2001. Even though in global poverty there has been a substantial reduction, it is presented with great regional differences.

The decline of poverty in China and Southeast Asia is a result of rapid economic growth and massive investments in human resource development. The number of poor people in China has come down from 606 million in 1981 to 212 million in 2001. However, in countries of Southeast Asia the decline has not been this rapid. It came down from 475 million in 1981 to 428 million in 2001.
