Describe the Indus river system on the foll heads: (i)Source (ii) Any two tributaries (iii) Indus Water Treaty.

(i) Source:


The river Indus rises near the Mansarovar Lake in Tibet . It flows through Baltistan and Gilgit and emerges from the mountains at Attock. It enters India in the Ladakh district of Jammu and Kashmir.


(ii) Tributaries:


Its tributaries include the Zanskar, Nubra, Shyok, Hunza, Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum.


(iii) Indus Water Treaty:


It was signed between Government of India and Pakistan for attaining the most complete and satisfactory utilisation of the waters of the Indus system of rivers. It fixes and delimits the rights and obligations of each in relation to the other concerning the use of these waters and of making provision for the settlement, in a cooperative spirit.
