Q5 of 34 Page 82

Give reasons for the following:

Salinity of Bay of Bengal is greater than the Arabian sea.

many rivers empty fresh water into Bay of Bengal. Near the coastal regions it receives a supply of fresh water. Comparatively Arabian Sea does not have too many rivers emptying into it. As the Bay of Bengal has a supply of fresh water while the Arabian sea circulates it’s salted sea water, the salinity of Bay of Bengal is greater than the Arabian Sea.

The Bay of Bengal has more rivers emptying into it, and these rivers relatively covers larger distances than those rivers emptying into the Arabian Sea. Thus, the minerals content of the rivers emptying into Bay of Bengal could be greater than the rivers emptying into the Arabian Sea. Hence, one could theoretically conclude that Bay of Bengal is more saline than the Arabian Sea.
