How did the status of the tribal chiefs change after the British established power in India?

Under British rule, the functions and powers of the tribal chiefs changed considerably.

Tribal chiefs had to pay tribute to the British.

They were allowed to keep their land titles over a cluster of villages and rent out lands.

They also lost the authority which they enjoyed earlier and were unable to fulfil their traditional functions.
