The caste system prevalent in earlier days in India is mentioned below:

a. There were four main castes that existed in India- Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra.


b. Brahmin and Kshatriya were of the upper caste.


c. Vaishyas consisted of traders and money lenders.


d. The potters, weavers, and peasants belong to the Shudras.


e. At the lowest level, there was a separate section of people called the untouchables or the Dalit.


f. They were not allowed to enter the temple, use water from wells or any other area which was used by upper caste.


g. They were mistreated as they were considered to be inferior humans.
