‘Lost Spring: Stories of Stolen Childhood’ describes the pitiable plight of the ragpickers of Seemapuri. Seemapuri is a place in the outskirts of Delhi where about 1000 refugees from Bangladesh live a life of misery and perpetual poverty. Their houses were structures of mud will roof of tin and tarpaulin. The area they live in is devoid of basic facilities like sewage, drainage and running water. Although they lack opportunities for education; the ration cards enable them to buy food grains. Food is more important for survival than identity. Rag picking is the only source of income for the people. For adults survival in Seemapuri means rag picking. Sometimes children like Saheb may get unexpected things while rag picking. These ‘gold’,as they call them could be traded for some petty money. So for them it is something wrapped in wonder which gives a special feeling.

The peddler in the story rattrap firmly believes that the whole world is a big rattrap. World existed only to serve baits for people. It provides joy, shelter and money in the same way a rattrap offers the bait like chese. As someone inside the rattrap touches the bait; it trapped him. In the same way all the luxuries in the world act as the rattraps for people. But one day, Peddler found himself trapped in a rattrap. He was treated nicely by the old Crofter at his home as a refugee. .Crofter shows Peddler all his hard earned money. Peddler gets tempted and trapped when he gets easy access to Crofter’s money. It served as a bait in the rattrap. Next morning, he stole the money and escaped into the forest. Peddler understood that he was in trap when he lost his way in the forest with a few kronor in his pocket. In the end he realises that the whole world is a rattrap will all the worldly temptations like wealth, food etc.
