In India, the so-called lower castes have been treated cruelly for a long time. Who advised Bama to fight against this prejudice, when and how?

To choose between professional loyalty and patriotism was a dilemma for Dr. Sadao. How did he succeed in betraying neither ?



In India the so called lower class people has been discriminated and exploited by the so-called upper castes for a very long time. Untouchability was a cruel reality then. Bama was a victim of social discrimination. She realized this when her elder brother, Annan adviced her to fight against this prejudice. In the Memories of Childhood, the young Bama wonders seeing a scene. A man was carrying a small packet by holding it by a string. He went to the landlord, bowed low and extended the packet towards him. She narrates this incident comically to Annan. Annan told her that there is nothing funny about this incident. He revealed that the reason behind this behaviour is the behaviour of the high class people towards the low caste ones. Hearing this Bama felt miserable and sorry for the old man. Her Annan adviced her to study hard and be ahead of others in her lessons. He made her understand that education is the key to overcome the caste bias and success.

Dr. Sadao is a successful Japaneese Surgeon. The conflict between the duty of a doctor and as a patriotic citizen was the dilemma he was facing. As America was in war with Japan, the American soldier was an enemy of his country. But as a doctor, he overcome the prejudices and acted with professional loyalty. His duty was to save human life as a professional. He treated the wounded American soldier by operating him and cared for him during the recovery period. But as a patriotic citizen, he also bound to hand over the soldier to Japanese police. So he informed the General about the American. This was the best decision to make.In this way Dr. Sadao neither betrayed his motherland nor his profession.
