Q6 of 36 Page 1

Write balanced chemical equations for the following processes:

(i) XeF2 undergoes hydrolysis.

(ii) MnO2 is heated with conc. HCl.

OR

Arrange the following in order of property indicated for each set:

(i) H2O, H2S, H2Se, H2Te – increasing acidic character

(ii) HF, HCl, HBr, HI – decreasing bond enthalpy

(i) Here is the balanced chemical equation when XeF2 undergoes hydrolysis,

Xenon difluoride reacts with water to form Xenon, Hydrogen fluoride and oxygen.

(ii) Here is the balanced chemical equation when MnO2 is heated with conc. HCl

Chlorine Gas(Cl), Manganese(II) Chloride and(MnCl2) and Water(H2O) is obtained when Manganese(IV) Oxide reacts with conc. HCl.

OR

(i) Increasing acidic character is

In binary acids, as the size of the element increases the bond becomes weaker and hence become a better acid due to easy release of H+ ion.

(II) Decreasing bond enthalpy is

Because as the size of halogen decreases the effective nuclear charge increases and hence, the bond enthalpy increases.
