Write the genotypes of the parents of a child suffering from thalassemia. State the cause of this disease.

Both the parents need to be heterozygous i.e. they’d be carriers since thalassemia is an autosomal recessive disorder.

Thalassemia is caused due to a mutation or deletion of one or more of the four genes. This reduces the rate of synthesis of one of the globin chain of haemoglobin.
