• The ozone layer provides protection to live cells and organisms and absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

• UV rays are highly injurious to health because DNA and proteins of living cells absorb UV rays. Because of this many lethal mutations and diseases can occur and skin cancer also.

• Ozone depletion occurring due to the high use of ozone-depleting substances.

• By recognizing the harmful and deleterious effects of ozone depletion, in 1987 the Montreal Protocol was signed for the control of emission of ozone-depleting substances.
