Write a short note on uses of petroleum and natural gas and how can they be conserved for future use.

• Petroleum- Petroleum is used as a source of power and fuel for automobiles, locomotives, planes and ships. It is used for generation of power. Its by-products are lubricants, kerosene, vaseline, tar, soap, etc. In South-Asian countries most of the petroleum is imported from other countries. Petroleum is found trapped between porous and non-porous rocks. It lies in sedimentary rock formations like sandstone, limestone or shale. It is believed that petroleum has been derived from plant and animal life buried millions of years ago. Reserves of petroleum are found in Digboi in Assam, Ankleshwar and Lunej in Gujarat, Mumbai High.

• Natural Gas- Natural gas is a clean fuel found with or without petroleum. It is used as a raw material in the industry and also as an energy source. It has low carbon dioxide content and therefore known as the fuel of the future. Large reserves of natural gas are found in Krishna-Godavari basin, Mumbai High, Gulf of Cambay, Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Methods how they can be conserved for the future:

• Use of Renewable sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy.

• Focusing on Reuse, reduce and recycle.

• Prohibiting wastage of energy.
