Q6 of 10 Page 337

Mention any four reasons leading to a dispute between the Sinhala and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka.

Four reasons that led to a dispute between the Sinhala and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka are:

1. After emerging independent, the Sri Lankan government came under the dominance of the Sinhala community, who had a larger population of 74% compared to other communities and groups. This led to a series of majoritarian measures being adopted, which led to clashes with Tamil communities.

2. The Sinhalas enforced their language as the only official language for use in the nation.

3. People from the Sinhala gained a preferential advantage for government jobs and admissions to universities.

4. The amendments in the Constitution upheld the protection and spread of Buddhism, in order to subjugate the Hindu, Muslim and Christian minorities.

It was because of the above reasons that the minority communities began feeling alienated and discontent with their government, which sought to uplift only people from the Sinhala community. They began feeling denied of equal political and democratic rights and this is what led to the dispute between the communities at large.
